5 Sites To Find Free Icons

Icons are an integral part of any website design, offering a seamless look and feel that can overall give users a better experience. An icon is a small graphic that serves as an intuitive representation of content. They are often more effective than words because of their compact and intuitive design. They also offer visual breaks in the text, thus improving readability.

Take a look at an example of how we used icons on our website:

But where can you find icons for your nonprofit’s website?  Here are 5 great resources for you!

Iconmonstr

This German site offers a variety of icons, all free for personal and commercial use without attribution. You can also modify, resize, recolor, or otherwise manipulate the icons to suit your needs. With over 2000 icons and counting, Iconmonstr is a great resource for any web designer.

Iconfinder

Iconfinder has over 600,000 icons. So, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for here. However, to access the full library, you’ll have to sign up for a premium membership. You can also download premium icons a-la-carte.

Iconfinder also has a sizable library of free icons. Just make sure to add those criteria into your search filter. You can also filter based on license types, so you don’t have to link back or to provide attribution when you’re using the icon. Most icons are also available in a variety of sizes, so you can pick one that fits your needs.

DryIcons

DryIcons has over 1000 icons available under free licenses, as long as you provide a link back. All icons are also available under regular licenses for a fee (so you do not have to provide a link back). DryIcons will also offer custom icons as a paid service.

FlatIcon

FlatIcon boasts itself as the largest database of free vector icons, and icons are available for download in a variety of formats. However, unless you’re a designer, you can just stick with the easy-to-use .PNG format. Most icons on this site do require attribution and backlinks.

Icon8

Icon8 is proud of their wide selection of icons and guarantees that they have all your icon needs covered. If not, you can order an icon and they will make it for you. You can download your icon for your use. Alternately, you can embed the icon onto your site via the HTML code provided. To use the icons for free, you do need to provide attribution. What’s neat about Icon8 is that its web app allows you to re-color the icons. So, you can easily adjust the icon design to fit your site’s color scheme.

With these resources, you can improve the look and feel of your website and improve the user experience without any costs!
